SCHOOL PRESENTATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR FALL 2010

THIN AIR 2010 brings together some of Canada’s most accomplished writers for kids and young adults. Our offerings vary from Writers to the Schools for students in grades K-3 and grades 10-12, to School Stage shows for students in grades 4-6 and grades 7-9.

Complete details and reservation forms are available on our website at www.thinairwinnipeg.ca/school-programs, however, here are some highlights for this year’s School Program:

 Kindergarten – Grade 3 – Writers to the Schools 

A writer visits young readers in a school classroom or library to read their work and talk about writing. Our participating writers this year are:

  • Ignatius Mabasa, an acclaimed writer and storyteller from Zimbabwe; 
  • Colleen Sydor, local writer who’s book Raising a Little stink won the McNally Robinson Book for Young People Award;
  • Jordan Wheeler, a screenwriter for North of 60 and Cashing In, and two books for young readers;
  • Anne Villeneuve, Quebec writer, illustrator and artist will show off her talents to students in French immersion and French classes.

 Grade 4-6 – School Stage 

Students gather at MTYP for an hour-long encounter with Shane Peacock, an award-winning writer who has stolen the hearts of readers with his atmospheric tales of young Sherlock Holmes. He brings his fourth novel to our stage.

 Grade 7-9 – School Stage 

Students gather at MTYP for an hour-long encounter with Allan Stratton and his novel exploring the impact of prejudice and loyalty in the life of a young Muslim-American teen.

Grade 10-12 – Writers to the Schools 

A writer meets senior students in their schools to read and share ideas about the writing process. Our participating writers this year include:

  • Martha Brooks, a Winnipeg writer known for her fearless characters
  • Margaret Buffie, a gifted Winnipeg writer with a passion for mentoring young writers
  • Ignatius Mabasa, an acclaimed writer and storyteller from Zimbabwe
  • Allan Stratton, a writer-actor whose novels are both smart and socially relevant
  • Colleen Sydor, a Winnipeg writer who finds the humour in teen awkwardness
  • Jordan Wheeler, a First Nations author and screenwriter (North of 60)
